Kitwe Art Exhibition

Yeats Library, IT Sligo in association with 

The Happy Planet One World Student Society 

invites you to the official opening of 

An exhibition of paintings by Zambian Artists 

from the Sligo Kitwe Cooperation Link Collection

to take place in the Social Zone (lower ground floor), Yeats Library on Tuesday 24 February at 5.30 pm.

The collection has been donated to IT Sligo by the Sligo Kitwe Cooperation Link, an organisation that has worked with communities in Kitwe in the Copperbelt of Northern Zambia.

Library Week- Assignment Focus

This week is National Library Week and the theme this year is 'Open for Business'. Yeats Library is 'open for business' with the focus this week on  resources to help you through your assignments such as Summon searching,  Endnote Web and assignment support guides available on Yeats Library Moodle page.

Drop-in labs for Endnote Web will be available from Mon-Wed at lunchtimes, 1.10-1.50pm,
in room B1041 and there will be a pop-desk on the corridor with guides on getting started with your assignment.

Sligo Gaelic Heritage & Folklore Event

The library is hosting 3 mini-lectures on Sligo's Gaelic Heritage & Folklore to take place on Thursday 14th Aug @ 17.00  in Lecture Theatre A0006 (across from Social Zone entrance, lower ground floor).

Book exhibition on Sligo's Gaelic Heritage

To coincide with the Fleadh  this week the library is running an exhibition on Sligo's Gaelic Hertiage with items from the Special Collections such as the 19th century facsimile editions of Irish medieval manuscripts: The Book of Leinster, The Book of the Dun Cow and The Book of Ballymote.

Also works by two Gaelic scholars Tadhg Connellan (1770-1854) and Owen Connellan (1797-1871) both from Sligo.

The exhibition is open 9am-5pm, 11th-18th August in the Library Social Learning Zone (lower ground floor).

Yeats Day

Today is Yeats Day, the 149th birthday of W.B. Yeats.
To coincide with the visit to Sligo of Her Excellency, Radhika Lal Lokesh, the Indian Ambassador to Ireland for this occasion, an exhibition on ‘Yeats and influences from India’ is currently on display in the Social Zone of the library.
Works dispalyed include:
The Post Office: a play by Rabindranath Tagore (Nobel prize winner from 1913),
The Ten Principle Upanishads (Indian Scriptures) by W.B. Yeats and Shri Purohit Swami, as well as books from Anne Yeats private collection on Indian Art (one signed).

Book launch in the library on World Book Day!

Negotiating Legitimacy - Rituals and Reflection in Schools

A book launch for the above title will take place in the Library Social Zone this evening, 6th March, at 5.30pm.

A brief overview of the book by the author:

The book has been published on the basis of my research project on reflection processes of primary school teachers. The research was carried out between 2010 and 2013 and there has been an abundance of material collected during the project. In the book I have condensed certain elements of the research:
- a comprehensive overview on theory of rituals in school,
- the suggestion to ask questions not of rituals, but of the actors in rituals,
- the importance to understand reflection as a social act and negotiation of legitimacy of defining, articulating and shaping reality,
- the problem of critically reflecting on ritual practices in institutional contexts,
- the need for critical questions as a route to consciously enacting alternatives.

Happy Halloween!

Oiche na Samhna, the 1st of November is traditionally when we remember the deceased and is also known as All Hallows. The 31st October is All Hallows Eve or more commonly known as Halloween which is associated with all that is ghostly and ghoulish. The vampire character of Dracula features prominently at this time of year. His creator Bram Stoker was from Dublin but his mother Charlotte Matilda Blake Thornley Stoker was from Sligo. An Taoiseach Enda Kenny was in the Yeats Library on Monday as part of his visit to IT Sligo. During his visit to the Library he spoke with students and staff about recent achievements and ongoing research within the Institute. This included an online chat from the Infozone with open and distance learning students living abroad.  He also visited the Special Collections Exhibiton in the Social Zone of first edtion books by W.B Yeats and Cuala Press titles.

  

Special Collections Exhibit: Works of the late Seamus Heaney (1939-2013)

The late Seamus Heaney was a poet, playwright and academic whose work is internationally renowned and respected.

On display is the poem Mid-Term Break (published in 1966) and a selection of titles by the Nobel Laureate including a signed copy of Stepping stones: interviews with Seamus Heaney by Dennis O’ Driscoll which was kindly donated by IT Sligo President Professor Terri Scott.

Special Collections Exhibit: Centenary of 1913 Dublin Lock-Out

The Dublin Lock-Out was a serious industrial dispute that began in the summer of 1913 when workers from the Irish Tram Company in Dublin, who were seeking a pay rise, were locked out of work because they refused to sign a pledge to leave their union, the Irish Transport & General Workers Union (ITG&WU). Other lockouts followed which caused widespread hardship and increased poverty, with over 300 employers and nearly 20,000 workers affected. The lockouts lasted until January 1914 when most workers were forced to return to work. Photos of the main trade union leaders Jim Larkin, James Connolly and William O'Brien are on display alongside the photo of the riots of 31 August 1913 also known as 'Bloody Sunday 1913' (Special Collections, exhibition cabinet no.2).

Special Collections Exhibition: Original issues of the Journal of the Cork Historical & Archaeological Society dating from 1892.

The Journal of the Cork Historical & Archaeological Society (JCHAS) has been in publication since 1892 covering topics on archaeology, history and geology. The issues on display are original issues from the early volumes of this journal and are just a selection from a larger collection kindly donated to Yeats Library by Maurice Meade (on display in Special Collections exhibition cabinet no.1, Social Zone)

Yeats International Summer School Forum

The Yeats International Summer School 2013 hosted one of their afternoon forums in IT Sligo yesterday. The forum on Yeats’s A Vision included international speakers Neil Mann, Berg Collection of English and American Literature at the New York Public Library; Matthew Gibson, Associate Professor of English Literature at the University of Macau in Southern China; Alex Davies, Professor of English at University College Cork; and Meg Harper, Glucksman Professor of Contemporary Writing in English at the University of Limerick, all pictured here with Institute Librarian Jim Foran.

 An Exhibition of Yeats Family items from the Library Special Collections were displayed in the Social Zone prior to the forum. These included first edition publications by W.B. Yeats and artwork and published material by Jack B. Yeats. A selection of art books and catalogues belonging to Anne Yeats, including several signed copies were also exhibited and over 70 publications from Cuala Press, formerly owned by Elizabeth (Lolly) Yeats.

Seachtaine na Gaeilge Event

IT Sligo International Office and Yeats Library have organised an Irish Langauge and Culture event for Seachtaine na Gaeilge. A talk will be given on the items on display in the Special Collections Exhibtion Space in the Social Zone followed by a lesson on some simple Irish phrases. After, enjoy some live traditional Irish music. Tea/coffee and sandwiches provided.

Quick Reads

Quick Reads are books published each year in conjunction with World Book Day (7th March, 2013) to promote reading for everyone.

This year, six new short stories by famous authors have been added to the collection.

These are now available to borrow from the library - see the Quick Reads stand beside the library information desk for the new titles.
