World Book & Copyright Day

Today is UNESCO World Book & Copyright Day - a day to recognise the important role books and the written word has in our education and throughout our lives.

World Book and Copyright Day (+World Book Night)

Today is International Day of the Book or World Book and Copyright Day. This UNESCO event is to celebrate and promote reading  throughout the world and also create copyright law awareness. Copyright is an intellectual property giving authors/creators exclusive rights to their own original works.

April 23rd is celebrated in Spain as the Day of the Rose where traditionally roses were exchanged as gifts. To mark the death of the famous Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes who died on this day 1926, the roses were replaced with books as a gifts. This is where the tradition of exchanging books to encourage reading on World Book Day and World Book Night came about. The date April 23rd also marks the births of the following international authors Maurice Druon (French), Haldor K.Laxness (Icelandic), Vladimir Nabokov (Russian) and the deaths of Josep Pla (Spanish), Miguel de Cervantes, and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega (both Spanish). Most notably April 23rd is also the date of the birth and death of William Shakespeare.

Today is World Book Day, a day in which the reading of books is celebrated and encouraged throughout Ireland and the UK.

A survey published today in the British Telegraph found that Half of books in homes remain unread.

Quick Reads

Quick Reads are books published each year in conjunction with World Book Day (7th March, 2013) to promote reading for everyone.

This year, six new short stories by famous authors have been added to the collection.

These are now available to borrow from the library - see the Quick Reads stand beside the library information desk for the new titles.

4th Year ECCE Project for World Book Day 2013

World Book Day (7th March) was designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and is marked in over 100 countries around the globe. The aim is to encourage people of all ages to read, in particular children.

The library has a display of some wonderful story books for young children created and designed as part of a 4th year project by students from the Early Childhood Care in Education course (who are pictutered with their lecturer Kate Duke and Ursula Cox from the library)

These books are currently on display at the library information desk.

World Book Day 2012

Today, March 1st,  is World Book Day and to celebrate this international event the  library has a wonderful display of children’s books, all created by  4^th year students from Early Childhood Care in Education. These are on display at the library information desk.
Also on display are a new range of books “Quick Reads” - they are brilliant, bite sized books by big name authors and celebrities. 

We would like to welcome you  to call to the library between 1 and 2pm today for a tea/coffee and chocolate bar all kindly sponsored by Wheat’s, the Book Nest, Students Union shop and Corporate Catering when you can browse the quick reads and view the displays.
