Practice Journal - arts practice with children and young people

Practice Journal is about 'Promoting professional arts practice with children and young people'. It features the latest on art and education legislation, as well as articles on national and international art projects for children.
The journal is published annually in Sligo by Kids Own Publishing Partnership Ltd.

The fourth edition of Practice Journal is now available for reference from the print journals display area on the Infozone.

New ScienceDirect Release - Favorites and Quick Links need to be bookmarked or saved!

New ScienceDirect release which affects you.

On Saturday 1 February, a new release of ScienceDirect will be launched with some changes that will affect you if you are currently registered as a user of ScienceDirect and have, within the last year, made use of the Favorites and Quick Links functions on the homepage.
The new release of ScienceDirect will remove these features from the homepage. We encourage you to bookmark or otherwise save any favorite and quick links that you have created. Your links will no longer be available from the homepage after the release.

What you need to do
Sign in to ScienceDirect prior to Saturday 1 February and bookmark or otherwise save any of the links that you want to keep.

Competition! Name the new CUA Institutional Repository and win a Kindle!

 The Connacht Ulster Alliance (GMIT, IT Sligo and Letterkenny IT) will launch their new Institutional Repository in February and is looking for a catchy name. An institutional repository is a digital collection of work by staff and students of an institute. This usually includes journal articles, conference reports, theses and dissertations. The new name could be an acronym, like NUIG’s Access to Research At NUI Galway (ARAN) or Trinity’s Access to Research Archive (TARA). The competition is open to the students and staff of all the CUA institutes. The closing date is Wednesday 19th February 2014 - send your entries to conry.siobhan@itsligo.ie. Good luck!

Archaeology Ireland

The winter issue of Archaeology Ireland features an article by Dr Marion Dowd (School of Science) on the contribution of non-archaeologists to the field of archaeology, in particular that of Jack Coleman.
Coleman, from Co. Cork, was an avid caver for nearly forty years and his field notes and research are of great importance for Irish Speleology and archaeology.
The article is available from Archaeology Ireland, Winter 2013, vol.27 no.4 on display in  the Science journals shelving area of the Information Zone.

Library Week 11th-15th November

The theme for Library week this year is 'Think Outside the Book'.
Yeats Library has currently nearly 50,000 books in stock but what if you can’t find the answers you want in a library book? Then why not think outside the book and take a look at the Library Website.

Try a Summon 2.0 search for article level searching of thousands of e-journals and e-books or check the A-Z Journals List for a journal title.
Explore other library services on offer like Interlending & Document Supply or book an Information Literacy Tutorial with a Librarian;  Request items from the Print Archive or Special Collections.
Check out the library Moodle page for access to online reading lists and advice and information on referencing, doing a dissertation or presentation.

Science Week 2013

 

Events for the 14th national Science Week took off with a bang on Sunday with the successful annual IT Sligo Science Fair which took place here on campus. 

The theme for this year is “Exploring the XTRA-Ordinary” and the science events are continuing throughout this week with evening talks on topics such as Exploring Mars, The Great Famine, Invasive Species Management, Birds of Prey and Fracking.

Happy Halloween!

Oiche na Samhna, the 1st of November is traditionally when we remember the deceased and is also known as All Hallows. The 31st October is All Hallows Eve or more commonly known as Halloween which is associated with all that is ghostly and ghoulish. The vampire character of Dracula features prominently at this time of year. His creator Bram Stoker was from Dublin but his mother Charlotte Matilda Blake Thornley Stoker was from Sligo.
