Book launch in the library on World Book Day!

Negotiating Legitimacy - Rituals and Reflection in Schools

A book launch for the above title will take place in the Library Social Zone this evening, 6th March, at 5.30pm.

A brief overview of the book by the author:

The book has been published on the basis of my research project on reflection processes of primary school teachers. The research was carried out between 2010 and 2013 and there has been an abundance of material collected during the project. In the book I have condensed certain elements of the research:
- a comprehensive overview on theory of rituals in school,
- the suggestion to ask questions not of rituals, but of the actors in rituals,
- the importance to understand reflection as a social act and negotiation of legitimacy of defining, articulating and shaping reality,
- the problem of critically reflecting on ritual practices in institutional contexts,
- the need for critical questions as a route to consciously enacting alternatives.

New ScienceDirect release which affects you.

On Saturday 1 February, a new release of ScienceDirect will be launched with some changes that will affect you if you are currently registered as a user of ScienceDirect and have, within the last year, made use of the Favorites and Quick Links functions on the homepage.
The new release of ScienceDirect will remove these features from the homepage. We encourage you to bookmark or otherwise save any favorite and quick links that you have created. Your links will no longer be available from the homepage after the release.

What you need to do
Sign in to ScienceDirect prior to Saturday 1 February and bookmark or otherwise save any of the links that you want to keep.

Competition! Name the new CUA Institutional Repository and win a Kindle!

 The Connacht Ulster Alliance (GMIT, IT Sligo and Letterkenny IT) will launch their new Institutional Repository in February and is looking for a catchy name. An institutional repository is a digital collection of work by staff and students of an institute. This usually includes journal articles, conference reports, theses and dissertations. The new name could be an acronym, like NUIG’s Access to Research At NUI Galway (ARAN) or Trinity’s Access to Research Archive (TARA). The competition is open to the students and staff of all the CUA institutes. The closing date is Wednesday 19th February 2014 - send your entries to conry.siobhan@itsligo.ie. Good luck!

Archaeology Ireland

The winter issue of Archaeology Ireland features an article by Dr Marion Dowd (School of Science) on the contribution of non-archaeologists to the field of archaeology, in particular that of Jack Coleman.
Coleman, from Co. Cork, was an avid caver for nearly forty years and his field notes and research are of great importance for Irish Speleology and archaeology.
The article is available from Archaeology Ireland, Winter 2013, vol.27 no.4 on display in  the Science journals shelving area of the Information Zone.
